What it is

A light source, not a hearing device

This is a rechargeable handheld unit with two soft, silicone-tipped buds. Each bud houses a pair of LEDs — one in the red range (650–660 nm), one near-infrared (810–850 nm) — behind a diffusing lens.

The bud rests at the entrance of the ear canal. It does not go deep, does not touch the eardrum, and produces no sound.

Sessions run 10–20 minutes and shut off automatically. The unit runs cool to the touch; most people describe the sensation as a faint warmth, or nothing at all.

The idea behind it

Photobiomodulation, in plain terms

Red and near-infrared light penetrates a few millimeters of tissue. The leading hypothesis is that it's absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria, and that this nudges cellular energy production and local blood flow. Researchers have applied that idea to wound healing, joint pain, and — more recently, and far more tentatively — the inner and middle ear.

That's the mechanism as it's currently understood: a hypothesis with laboratory support, not a settled explanation. A plausible mechanism is not the same thing as a proven benefit.

What people use it for

Tinnitus — ringing, hissing, buzzing

The most studied of the three in a photobiomodulation context, and still studied only in small trials with inconsistent results. Some participants report a drop in loudness or distress; others report nothing.

Vertigo — spinning, imbalance

Vertigo has many distinct causes, and light does not address most of them. Positional vertigo in particular is treated with repositioning maneuvers, not light. Get a diagnosis before deciding this is the tool.

ETD — eustachian tube dysfunction

Fullness, popping, muffled hearing. The eustachian tube sits well beyond the reach of a bud at the canal entrance, so any effect here would be indirect. Evidence is the thinnest of the three.
